About BonsaiBonsai is the art of growing small trees that mimic the way trees grow in nature. It was started in China centuries ago, and has been refined over the years by the Japanese. Like Japanese gardens and ink paintings, Bonsai seeks to show the way of the natural world. Straight lines, or square and rectangular shapes that one may see in a Western garden are rarely seen in Bonsai. Rather, growers seek to cultivate trees that curve and flow like trees in nature, affected by winds, storms and the changing seasons. The Japanese name Bonsai simply means a plant grown in a tray or pot, yet has developed over the years to become far more. The art of Bonsai has its own vocabulary and set of rules, but the masters of Bonsai go beyond the rules to create plants that are living works of art. There is no one type of Bonsai tree since the techniques of Bonsai can be applied to several types of trees and plants. Deciduous trees or plants such as maple, holly or boxwood can be used for Bonsai. Evergreens such as pines, junipers, or cedars can become Bonsai trees, often with stunning effects. You are invited to attend our monthly meetings to begin learning about this ancient art or, if you are an experienced Bonsai grower, to further your practice and to share your knowledge with others.
